Bob Mustard set up Stalcom in 2000 to concentrate on future BIW structures using his experience in Steel, Aluminium and Composites, hence the name of the new company.  

He started his career as a graduate engineer at Rover Group, and latterly at Hydro, Lotus and Prodrive. Since then Bob has worked on a vast array of programs across the industry, from sports cars, light trucks, London Taxis to secret projects in the Defence industry.  The common denominator across all these projects was to make low volume programs affordable while maximising strength and reducing weight.  

During the last 20 years the customer requirements for strength and torsional rigidity have continued to become ever more exacting, playing into the hands of Stalcom’s expertise. In recent years Bob and his team have pioneered new technologies to support the low volume, low investment route to market such as the patented Flex-Tech and PowderBond fixing methods in collaboration with key partners.

Robin Dodd

Robin Dodd leads Stalcom’s design team and applies his extensive practical design for manufacture experience to optimise part manufacturing and assembly processes. Having previously led the design team at Lotus Lightweight Structures, Robin has designed and delivered an impressive portfolio of structurally bonded aluminium structures.

Ian Ramsay

With a background in IT and Aerospace, and extensive practical engineering capability, Ian Ramsay fits in well at Stalcom where breadth and depth of capability is important as we develop the manufacturing side of the business. Growth in our Niche Lean Manufacturing capability with all the necessary quality systems and processes will be key and a significant focus for Ian in the coming months.

Whilst still being relatively young, Alasdair has built up extensive design and build experience of lightweight structures for EV’s and CAV’s. Having studied Automotive Engineering at Coventry University Alasdair brings a fresh approach to new vehicle concepts.

Technical Specialist

Dave Edwards

Having collaborated on lightweight body R&D projects over many years, Stalcom extended its relationship with Dave Edwards by creating a new Technical Specialist role. Dave is supporting a number of internal R&D and external consultancy projects and his metallurgical and practical automotive engineering experience adds considerably to Stalcom’s capability. In particular, Dave’s renowned expertise in superplastic hot forming of aluminium and the synergies with hot processing of thermoplastic composites will allow further new design and process developments of Stalcom Lightweight Laminated panels.

PARTNERSHIPS

Partnership is our watchword.  We soon realised that rather than attempt to be a full-service engineering consultant under one roof, the future lay with collaborations with chosen partners offering complimentary technologies.  This way Stalcom have been able to assemble consortiums at short notice to take on a variety of exacting programs.

Powdertech Surface Science provides a broad range of pre-treatment, powder coating and bonding services for aluminium, magnesium and lightweight materials. In March 2018 it launched an adhesive-free PowderBondPP which bonds polypropylene to aluminium with over three times adhesive bond strength, and a short efficient cycle time. Stalcom worked alongside Powdertech to develop this new produce and now uses PowderBondPP in its chassis assemblies.

It recently unveiled a new product, W8SVR neolaminate - a continuous-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) composite, developed as a refinement of organosheets.W8SVR is designed to achieve the same strength and stiffness as existing solutions while being up to 20% lighter.
